Urinary Tract Infections In Dogs (UTI)
Does your dog have the symptoms of a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)?
If you have ever experienced a UTI infection yourself, you know how uncomfortable it can be. Symptoms include fever, chills and burning when you attempt to urinate or pain emanating from your pelvis. A UTI in dogs can be quite painful as well.
While dogs can instinctually hide pain, they cannot hide symptoms. When dogs have Urinary Tract Infections they might ask to be let outside more often, have accidents in the home, blood in the urine, strain when urinating with less urine output and start and stop urinating more often than usual on a walk.
Here are 7 telltale symptoms of Urinary Tract Infections in dogs
1. Peeing blood. It could be small trickles or a red river.
2. Straining to pee usually multiple times during a walk. Not being able to fully void themselves.
3. Pink stains on the carpets in your home.
4. New habit of licking their genitals often.
5. Frequent urination or frequent attempts to urinate but voiding less or no pee.
6. Pain from mild to moderate. A mildly uncomfortable dog or one who cries out when peeing.
7. Accidents in the home.
NOTE- If you have an indoor dog who uses Pee Pads indications of a UTI can be easier to detect as it will be visible on the pad. Pee Pad trained dogs can have any or all symptoms from the list above.

Diagnosing UTIs in Dogs
Collect a sample of your dog’s urine (You can get a sample collection tray and bottle at your Vets office) and bring it to your Veterinarian for testing. (If you do not go immediately then refrigerate the specimen until you leave)
Your Veterinarian will perform a urinalysis and a Culture which takes several days. By letting the bacteria grow it determines if there is an infection and what bacteria is causing it. Bladder infections in dogs are less common in males than females, so a bladder infection may indicate an issue with the Kidneys or Prostate. If stones are suspected, Radiographs, Blood Tests, Ultrasounds and possibly more invasive Cystoscopy maybe be recommended by your veterinarian to make a proper diagnosis.
Urinary Tract Stones
There are several types of stones that might be part of a bladder infection which include Struvite, Calcium Oxalate, Urate, and Cystine Stones.
Prevention of UTIs in dogs
TIP - Want your dog to drink more? Boil some chicken in water, remove the chicken and skim the fat off the top of the broth, or you can also boil chicken bones alone. Now you have a delicious healthy broth that you can refrigerate and add to your dogs drinking water. Substitute a different protein if your dog does not do well with chicken.
4. Holistic veterinarians recommend Homeopathic Remedies which have been used since the late 1700s. The premise behind Homeopathy is, “Like cures Like”. These remedies are 100% natural and have no side-effects. Companies like Boiron, Zicam, and Cold-EEZE can be found at drugstores across America. Cold-EEZE has double-blind clinical studies and even makes the legal claim, “Shortens the duration of the common cold”.
Treatment of UTIs in dogs
Allopathic Veterinarians might prescribe a prescription kibble or canned food for Struvite and Calcium Oxylate stones which has controlled levels of Magnesium, Calcium & Phosphorous, low sodium, reduced fat and could include, Potassium Citrate and Omega 3 fatty acids. Holistic Veterinarians believe that high carb diets like kibble are unfavorable because they are high in magnesium, inflammatory and can help cause Struvite Stones. Instead, they believe in a meat-based diet.
Antibiotics may be prescribed but because bladder issues are sometimes due to inflammation and not bacteria, Holistic Veterinarians believe that antibiotics do not always have a positive benefit. (Some dogs may also develop an antibiotic resistance if they are used too often)In the worst case scenario surgery or possibly breaking up the stones with Ultrasonic Waves may be necessary to remove them from the bladder to prevent blockages.
