There are many problems that can affect a cat's lower urinary system. Idiopathic Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease is a general term for disorders characterized by blood in the urine, difficult or painful urination, abnormal, frequent passage of urine, urinating in inappropriate locations, and partial or complete blockage of the urethra. Also known as Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC), Feline Urologic Syndrome (FUS), or Interstitial Cystitis, this treatable condition occurs in the bladder and urethra of the lower urinary tract; that is, the tube from the bladder to the outside, through which urine flows out of the body.

Signs of Urinary Tract Problems

1. Frequent Urination

You may notice that when you’re gone, your normally well-behaved cat is peeing in unusual places and producing a large volume of urine.

2. Difficulty Urinating

When cats get UTIs, they may strain or have difficulty urinating, it may be painful for them to urinate, and they may have blood in their urine.

3. Other Symptoms

Dribbling urine; Crying out while urinating; Frequently or obsessively licking the genital area.

Determining the Cause of UTIs in Cats

Your vet will analyze a urine sample for the presence of white blood cells, which signal infection, or crystals, which suggest that the cat may have bladder stones. A urinalysis is a start, but culturing the urine — taking a sample and letting bacteria grow — will let the doctors to know for sure if there’s an infection and identify the bacteria causing it. It usually takes a few days to get the results of a urine culture.

How to Prevent UTIs in Cats

Getting more water into your cat is never a bad thing. A drinking fountain for pets could be a great idea. Feeding moist rather than dry foods may minimize recurrence of signs. The goal is to promote flushing of the bladder and urethra by increasing urine volume, thereby diluting the concentrations of toxins, chemical irritants, and substances that can add to the components that produce urinary tract stones and lead to inflammation of the bladder and urinary tract. Whether prescriptions medications are used will depend upon the diagnosis. Also probiotics are known to help prevent recurring UTIs. Probiotics are thought to help by displacing the bacteria causing the infection and enhancing the immune system’s response to infection-causing bacteria.
