The liver helps with digestion and blood clotting for your dog, it helps to remove toxins from his system. If the liver isn't working right, it can make your dog sick. But the liver disease can often be treated and managed.
What are the Symptoms of Liver Disease in Dogs
It's easy to miss the symptoms of liver disease. They're similar to those for other problems. Your dog may lose interest in food and start losing weight. He may vomit or have diarrhea.
If your dog's liver disease isn't caught early, it can lead to a serious brain condition called hepatic encephalopathy.
Several diseases, including liver dysfunction, are common in older dogs. Certain dog breeds, such as Dobermans, Rottweilers, Yorkshire terriers and Cocker Spaniels, are more likely to be born with or are prone to develop particular liver problems. Some breeds, such as Bedlingtons and West Highland white terriers have been known to have difficulty excreting copper, which can impact a dog’s liver or copper-associated hepatitis. Medications containing acetaminophen can damage the liver in dogs.
